POLSON — “Krava,” Veronika Novotna’ said, pointing to a picture of a cow on her Power Point presentation.

“Krava,” the first-graders in Helen Siemers’ class repeated.

Novotna’, an exchange student from the Czech Republic attending Polson High School, visited Cherry Valley School March 1 to share some information about her country with elementary students.

She showed students pictures of a clock dating from the 13th century. The Czech Republic also is home to lots of cows and sheep as is Montana according to Novotna’. She lives in a small town, but it is larger than Polson.

One question Novotna’ was asked was about how she learned to speak English. In her country, she said students begin English lessons in kindergarten and are required to learn two foreign languages.

Novotna’ painted an egg she had blown empty and brought it to show the children. The egg was predominantly orange, with intricate bands of dots and flowers.

After showing students the brightly painted egg, Novotna’ demonstrated egg-blowing as the children watched.

As a special project for the first graders, Novotna’ brought enough eggs so each child could paint one.

The hollow, painted eggs will be on display in the Cherry Valley lobby during the month of March.
