News from the Polson Fire Department

POLSON — Oct. 9-15 is National Fire Prevention Week. Your children will likely meet local firefighters and hear about smoke detectors, exit plans and the dangers of playing with fire. Please spend a few minutes reviewing the plans for your family should a fire start in your home and change the batteries in your smoke detectors.

The NFPA has chosen the theme “Replace Smoke Detectors Every 10 Years” for 2016. Most of us know to test our smoke detectors regularly. We know to change the batteries twice a year. But, we don’t know that smoke detectors expire every 10 years. If you know your smoke detectors are older than 10 years, replace them. If you don’t know how old your smoke detectors are, assume they are over 10 years old and replace them. Mark in your new smoke detectors the year you purchased them so you can replace them again in 10 years.

Firefighters rarely save lives. Fully functioning, well-placed smoke detectors actually save lives. If you need assistance replacing smoke detectors or batteries, contact your local fire department. Generally, someone in your local fire department can help you find someone to assist you. Business supports food banks THINKSTOCK PHOTO Replace smoke alarms every 10 years
