POLSON — Civic-minded volunteers on Envision Polson action committees continue to work to positively impact their community. Committees discuss, plan and implement projects related to their specific concern. Additional volunteers are always welcome. For more information, contact Penny Jarecki at pennymt@centurytel.net

The Montana Senior Olympics will be held in Polson in June of both 2017 and 2018. There are 14 events that will take place in Polson, Ronan and at the Salish Kootenai College gymnasium.

—Vibrant Downtown Committee: The Parade of Lights is set for Friday, Dec. 2. “Buy Local” will be emphasized now through Christmas, and the Polson Chamber of Commerce is once again promoting “Chamber Bucks.” The Vibrant Downtown Committee is also looking for a new chairperson. —Youth and Education Committee: Superintendent Rex Weltz is looking for people interested in teaching evening Adult Education classes. This is an opportunity to provide a service to the community and use the school facilities. He would like to offer Adult Education in both the fall and spring. Please contact Rex at 406-883- 6355 if you are interested. —Health and Wellness Committee: There were a couple local run/walk events in the valley this fall including Your Life Matters 5K, which emphasizes suicide prevention and the Monster Mash, focusing on healthy activities during Red Ribbon Week.

—Economic Development Committee: Lake County Community Development is scheduling a series of computer classes specifically geared towards business people. It was also reported that many new businesses are springing up all over the valley, but the two major challenges for new companies include lack of housing for middle class newcomers to the community, and lack of skilled workers.

The Montana Economic Development Association recently held their conference at KwaTaqNuk Resort and Casino, which brought in 100 attendees.

Leadership Flathead Reservation Project is underway with 20 community leaders attending the first organizational meeting, including business owners, department heads and teachers. This is a nine-month program with monthly workshops from September 2017 through May 2018, and is patterned after Leadership Montana, Leadership Missoula and Leadership Kalispell. LLCDC is sponsoring the organization with Billie Lee developing the first year’s program. After this, the graduating class plans the following year’s curriculum. The cost is $1,000 per person.

Results of the Event Center at Polson Fairgrounds feasibility study and community survey will be available soon. A public hearing at the County Commissioners’ office will be held in November.
