RONAN – One outstanding music student in Ronan was chosen for a grand honor.

Ronan High School senior Jenaya Burns is set to attend the All-Northwest Wind Symphony program where 1,000 students from Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington and Wyoming are scheduled to gather in Bellevue, Washington, in mid-February to rehearse and perform a concert under the direction of world-renowned conductors.

The All-Northwest musicians were selected from more than 4,600 students who auditioned to participate in the event managed by the Washington Music Educators Association.

A team of judges selected Jenaya for the symphony after hearing her recorded audition where she played the clarinet. She started playing the instrument in sixth grade with the school band, which gives her about six years of experience.

This isn’t her first big musical opportunity. She qualified for All-State a few times and she attended the University of Montana’s All-Stars program. She likes playing with bigger bands.

“I get the opportunity to play with and hear other instruments,” she said. “I like how music lets me be expressive.”

Her musical focus has made an impact on her future, and she plans to study it in college.

“I want to double major in elementary education and performance with the clarinet,” she said.

Her advice to younger musicians: practice and look for opportunities. “It’s hard work but it’s worth it when you see how far you’ve come,” she said.
