Editor,

The Nk’wusm Salish Language School administration, teachers, staff, and students are to be commended for their fine performance of “Rabbit and Fox.” The show was presented to the public at the Arlee-Charlo Theatre on the Salish Kootenai College campus.

Narrated by an outstanding eighth-grade girl, the tale was first delivered in the Salish language, followed by an English translation. Each character portrayed by the Nk’wusm children showcased their lines in fluent Salish.

The students displayed impressive confidence and exceptional presentation skills incorporating native language learned at Nk’wusm.

After the show, the audience was invited to meet the students. Everyone was welcomed with a firm handshake, a direct look in the eye, and a sincere “thank-you” laced with personal comments.

We walked away thinking, “Wow.” Everyone connected with this immersion school sure seems to know what they’re doing. The Salish language stands to flourish with this kind of treatment.

The success of the program ultimately lies with the capability of its kids. From what we witnessed last Thursday, the Nk’wusm students are a first-rate reflection of what the school is deftly accomplishing.
