News from Lake County 4-H

HELENA — Lake County 4-H members and leaders recently traveled to Helena to participate in the 4-H Citizenship Seminar program and learn more about the Montana legislative process. Anya Smith of the Saddle Mountain 4-H Club and Kylee Wells of Mission Valley Ranch Hands 4-H Club wrote bills and served in committees to pass their bills, while participating in meetings and sessions to learn about the process of creating laws.

While in Helena, Anya and Kylee also participated in community service projects that included writing letters of thanks to veterans, making toys for animal shelters and blankets for emergency response agencies.

The highlight of the three-day event was the Biennial 4-H Legislative Breakfast on Jan. 17, sponsored by Montanans for 4-H, a volunteer 4-H group. Anya and Kylee were able to meet Sen. Dan Salomon SD47, HR Speaker Pro Tempore Greg Hertz (HD12), and Rep. John Fleming (HD93) during the breakfast to share with them the projects they are involved in through 4-H and to learn more about what the state legislators do while in session.

With a focus on “4-H Grows True Leaders,” this year’s event presented 4-H alumni and current 4-H members with leadership skills that are positively impacted by 4-H and Montana State University Extension. Members and adult leaders and volunteers highlighted the personal importance of the program, and the 4-H benefits to the state. The educational programs of 4-H are open to all youth—both rural and urban.

Montanans for 4-H thanks legislators and capitol staff who participated in the breakfast to learn about 4-H Youth Development and MSU Extension, which sponsors 4-H around the state. Kylee and Anya would like to thank Senator Salomon, Rep. Hertz and Rep. Fleming for making the time to visit with them and the Lake County 4-H Council for sponsoring this trip to Helena.
