Maidens clinch divisional title in front of home crowd, 23-0

RONAN – The Maidens thrilled the home crowd with a 64-55 victory over Florence to capture the Western B Divisional title on Saturday.

“It was a great weekend,” Maidens’ head coach Ron Hanson said. “The girls came together Saturday and played a great team game.”

The Maidens led by one, 17- 16 at the end of the first quarter, but used a 16-6 run in the second quarter to take control of the game.

Micalann McCrea and Alicia Camel mirrored each other statistically. They each paced the Maidens with 19 points, pulled down nine rebounds and dished out six assists.

Louetta Conko-Camel scored 12 points and Jaelynn Askan added eight points and grabbed six rebounds. “We had a lot of girls step up and help us become divisional champions,” Hanson said.

On Thursday, McCrea and Lee Camel both scored a gamehigh of 13 points apiece for the Maidens in a 47-24 toppling of the Libby Lady Loggers.

The Maidens found themselves trailing Bigfork 17-11 after the first quarter on Friday. The Maidens ended the half with a 34-27 lead, due to a 23- 10 scoring surge in the second quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the Maidens withstood a furious 23-point rally by Bigfork to hold on for a 65-60 victory that sent the Maidens to the championship game on Saturday.

Lee Camel had a game-high of 27 points and McCrea and Alicia Camel both added 17 points each.

On March 9-11, the Maidens make their way to Billings for the Class B State Championship tournament.
