ST. IGNATIUS – During the St. Ignatius City Council meeting on Tuesday, March 7, the Lake County Office of Emergency Management director asked for a letter of approval, a community member proposed the start of a new farmers market, and the potholes in town were considered.
Lake County OEM Director Steve Stanley asked the council for a letter of support for the county’s emergency operation plan so it can be updated. The plan includes the procedures the county follows in a disaster, which includes man-made and natural disasters ranging from floods to train wrecks. Stanley said the plan needs to be updated every five years and he is in the updating process, and the plan is shared with Sanders County.
The St. Ignatius City Council agreed to support updating the plan.
Now Stanley will apply for a grant to fund the development of the plan. He said it costs about $35,000 per county for a disaster plan. Once the plan is updated, the State of Montana reviews it and the Lake County commissioners need to approve it. “It takes about a year,” he said of the process to update the plan.
Shay Farmer addressed the council and said several community members are interested in forming a farmers market in town at the Golden Yoke parking lot on Mountain View Drive. Mayor Charley Gariepy said a business license was needed for about $10; otherwise, he approved of the project.
Farmer is in the process of doing a community survey to find out what people are interested in seeing at the market, including the best time, day and activities. She is asking for anyone interested in being a vendor or adding suggestions to contact her at stignatiusfarmersmarket@ gmail.com.
Public Works Director Scott Morton said the streets in town are in desperate need of repair after the heavy snowfall this winter. He said starting repair projects depends on weather conditions. The town’s spring clean up is being organized for April; anyone wanting to help is welcome to volunteer. More information will soon be available.
