Editor,
Our town of Polson captivates tourists in the summertime with lake views and first class outdoor recreation; yet however beautiful and interactive our town landscape may be, we sorely lack an inspired and revitalized downtown. Local favorites, Bigfork and Whitefish, have become popular destinations for original shops and delicious eateries, bringing in not just seasonal crowds but year-round residents as well.
It is sad that Polson has not capitalized on encouraging our existing small businesses and promoting new growth. I am aware that there are complications and hurdles that must be overcome when opening a new business, but I am disappointed that rather than attempting to help small business owners with the bureaucratic tape, there is an impression of wiping their hands of the issue.
Small towns are built on the foundation of active citizens helping their neighbor. I wish our city would try a more friendly approach to building our community rather than remaining so firmly black and white. Polson could yet be the city we desire, but without compromise and spirit we will continue to have “for sale” signs in windows and throngs of traffic passing through rather than seeking out our many incredible and existing businesses.
