DIXON – The Bison Stampede kicks off this Saturday, April 8, to help the Dixon School District fix their basketball court.

“The basketball court in front of the school needs to be repaired, but the school doesn’t have the funding to do it,” said Dixon Administrative Assistant Breezy Coston. So, the community is stepping in with an annual fundraiser.

The repair project would also give the court the ability to transform into a tennis court. “We don’t have anywhere for the kids to play tennis right now,” she said.

The first stampede was held three years ago to raise funds to develop the playground; the second year was for campus improvements, and this year the focus is on the court.

“The first year that we did this the community really loved it and wanted us to keep doing it,” she said. “So, we keep doing it to improve the school.”

Carla Hahn, a seventh grader, created this year’s design that inspired the print for the race t-shirts. Although the shirts feature a bison, the race doesn’t really have anything to do with the actual animal.

People have said that it looks a bit like a bison stampede as people run through town. People can sign up right until the race starts in front of the school. The 10K takes off at 9 a.m. Thirty minutes later, 5K racers start at 9:30 a.m. The free 1-mile fun run starts at 10:15 a.m. Race registration is $25, which includes a shirt. A pancake breakfast is also available from around 8:30 to 11 a.m., for a small fee. Race maps and registration are available at the school’s website, dixonschool. org. Anyone wanting to volunteer can call 406- 246-3566.
