Panthers claw Eagles
PABLO — Despite being down most of the game, Two Eagle River’s quarterback Clay Malatare put up his team's only digits with a 1-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.
The Alberton Panthers led from the beginning and jumped out to a 0-18 lead in the first quarter. Alberton’s Cody Ishler led the Panthers with three touchdowns.
Although the Alberton Panthers beat the Two Eagle River School Eagles 38-6, head coach Clayton Malatare said, “Well, I’d say for our first year, the Eagles were doing okay against the fourth-ranked team in the state.”
Clayton added, “For some of the kids, this is their first year playing football.”
“The players give us 110 percent out there all the time,” Clayton said, giving credit to his Eagles.
As far as statistics go, Clayton said quarterback and son Clay threw the football 24 times and completed 14 of those passes for 239 yards.
Receivers Marcus Brown, with seven catches and a total of 85 yards, and Artie Mendoza, with three grabs for 66 yards, led the Eagles. Clay rushed for 122 yards in 12 carries, leading the Eagles.
Brown scored the Eagles' lone touchdown in the final seconds of the game.
The Two Eagle River coaching staff as well as the players are learning a totally new game: six-man football, Clayton said.
One major difference is every player on the field is eligible to be thrown a pass.
This weekend the Eagles travel to Valier to face the Panthers.
