POLSON — Kindergarten and first grade students at Cherry Valley Elementary School saw the fruits of their labor realized last week with the planting of a new tree on school property. John Campbell from Delaney’s Landscape Center in Polson presented facts about the young Autumn Blaze maple tree to students who watched as he planted it on the west side of the school.

Students learned that the tree could grow as tall or taller than their school building and that it could live to be 200 or more years old.

The tree was selected for its vibrant red leaves which students will use in the fall to make art projects.

In order to purchase the tree, Cherry Valley students sold small packets of sunflower seeds last winter for $1 a piece.

With every seed packet sold, students added a handprint flower to their colorful mural of blooming flowers.

An inspirational message about “Planting Seeds of Peace” was attached to the seed packets in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Part of the message reads, “We hope that as these seeds grow into beautiful sunflowers around Polson in the spring, you will continue to be inspired by his words and legacy.”

The seeds to tree project fulfilled a community service requirement of the school’s Food Corps program.
