Murder convict faces sexual assault charges

POLSON — A 51-year-old man who served time in prison for deliberate homicide and attempted deliberate homicide following a shooting incident at a gravel pit south of Arlee in 1982 has been charged with two counts of sexual assault of a minor.
According to a court document, Donald Dean Grant touched the private parts of two minor siblings in 2006 and/or 2007. Grant was a neighbor to the alleged victims at the time in a case that was investigated by Polson Police.
Bond was set at $50,000 with a requirement that he wear an active GPS-monitoring device if released.
Grant was convicted after a trial in December of 1982 for shootings that took place in July of that year. He shot and killed Jay Witteman while he was camping in a tent. Another man in the tent, Carl Warbitsky, was uninjured. According to a court document, the two men were out-of-state motorcyclists who spoke to Grant at a restaurant parking lot about where they could camp. Grant directed them to the gravel pit and later went there in order to kill them and take a motorcycle.
Grant was sentenced to 110 years for homicide and 50 years for attempted homicide with the sentences to run consecutively. However, he did not serve the full terms.
County attorney Steve Eschenbacher said Grant was arrested on a parole violation prior to being charged with the sexual assaults.
Grant pleaded not guilty to the sexual assault charges on April 20 before Lake County District Court Judge Kim Christopher. A jury trial is scheduled for Aug. 21.
