CHARLO – Dirt was a flyin’ Thursday afternoon during the official Charlo Sports Complex groundbreaking ceremony in Charlo.
During the brief ceremony, class presidents from kindergarten through the 12th grade officially broke ground on the first of the threephase renovation project and many didn’t stop with a single shovel of dirt.
The first phase of the project gives a major uplift to a field that has been standing in close to its original state since it was built back in the 1970s by community volunteers. Improvements involve re-crowning of the filed, installation of a new underground drainage system, resetting of the goal post and laying of new sod.
According to project spokesman Harley Colman, the field is scheduled to be completed and ready for play come football season. The second phase of the project involves the removal of the existing dirt track and the installation of an all-weather rubberized track and approaches.
The final phase will culminate in the installation and repositioning of all-new full field lighting and fencing around the track.
“There is still a long way to go before the remaining two phases can be paid for,” Coleman said.
