KALLISPELL – Cassie Carlyle made an undefeated run to the state championship. It took another undefeated to stop her.
The senior from Polson, stormed through the divisional championships a week ago and rolled through the first three rounds of the State Class A Tennis Tournament at Flathead Valley Community College in Kalispell. She reached the final match at No. 1 singles on Friday and had the tough task of playing Glendive’s senior Ceeara Staiger who was also undefeated on the season.
Carlyle gave Staiger the best match of any player all tournament, but it wasn’t enough in a 6-2, 6-4 loss.
“It was nice to play someone who is better at tennis than I am,” Carlyle said of Staiger. “It makes the match more interesting.”
Polson girls No. 1 doubles team of Olivia Hewston and Kyler Lundeen finished fifth in the state tournament. They fell in semifinals to the second place Billings Central team of Hailey Keller and Molly Putnam. Hewston and Lundeen defeated the Whitefish team of Paige Sproul and Cailyn Ross 6-0, 6-4 to claim the fifth-place finish.
On the boy’s side of the net, No. 1 singles player Colin Kenney fell 6-2, 6-1 to eventual state champion
Simon Marshall of Billings Central in the semifinals and was defeated by Belgrade’s Jeff Fournier 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 in the battle for fifth place.
Polson’s No. 1 doubles team of Matt Sitter and Cadis Chowning and No. 2 doubles team of Jaron Morgan and Kaiden Forman-Webster battled each other for fifth and sixth place. Sitter and Chowning prevailed over teammates Morgan and Forman-Webster, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.
Both boys and girls finished in fourth place in the Class A team standings.
