Teachers celebrated at end of year picnic

Nearly 200 teachers from Polson, Ronan and other Lake County schools met on Friday, June 9, to celebrate the start of the summer at a teacher appreciation picnic and concert.
The free event was hosted by Riverside Recreation with food provided by The Cove Deli and Pizza, and other local donors. Several prizes, including boat and jet ski rentals, were given away via a raffle.
A slight breeze blew off the lake and the sun peeked in and out of clouds as teachers sat around tables and fire pits or played lawn games. Children and dogs ran around the picnic area.
For Mary Larson, the event was twice as special. Not only did it mark the end of the school year, but also the first day of her retirement after 37 years of teaching, the last 32 of which were at Linderman Elementary School in Polson.
Matt Bishop, a math teacher at Polson Middle School, had a graduation of his own. Starting next year, he will teach math and business classes at Polson High school.
Bishop said the event is a great way to end the year.
“It’s really nice to get to talk with all of the other teachers,” he said. “Even though I see them every day I don’t often get much time to talk.”
According to Eric Huffine, owner of Riverside Recreation, he and his staff were trying to think of events they could hold to give back to the community. The idea to celebrate teachers came up naturally.
Both his mom and girlfriend are teachers, and teachers have always had a positive impact in his life, he said.
Huffine said he hopes to turn the event into an annual occasion.
