Since 2008, the Montana Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (MTAND), formerly the Montana Dietetic Association, has honored non‐dietitians with an Award of Excellence for Nutrition Advocacy. The award is presented to individuals who have worked to optimize the health for Montanans as advocates for food and nutrition. The awards were presented at the annual MTAND Food and Nutrition Summit on June 8 in Billings. Local 2017 recipient is Dawn Thomas of Arlee. Dawn is a member of the Flathead Nation and Salish Elder. With her training in ethnobotany and community gardening, Dawn developed a Native Plant Nursery at the Salish Kootenai College and a native plant manual for her tribe. She has worked on a grant from the Montana State University Food and Health Lab to increase the level of fresh food into commodity programs. She is also spearheading Salish Kootenai College’s first Local Food Summit in 2017.
