POLSON – Both Mission Valley Mariner squads opened the 23rd Annual Firecracker Tournament with victories.
On Friday, the Mariners B squad defeated the Kootani Valley Rangers 6-5. The B squad also easily won their game against the Bitterroot Red Sox B team on Saturday 5-3, however they dropped their Sunday game 8-2 to the Missoula Pioneers.
The Mission Valley Mariners A squad slipped by the Dillion Cubs 12-11 on Saturday and lost a hard-fought close one to the Glacier Twins B team 10-9 on Sunday.
The Mariners A and B squads played a game each on Monday and Tuesday after press deadline.
Other activities during the four-day tournament included a home run derby, hit the bucket contest, a crawdad crawl, relay around the bases race, baseball bingo and trivia during the games. They also had a pulled pork dinner.
After the games on Saturday, there was a special Movie on the Mound event which featured the baseball movie the Sandlot.
