POLSON – Competitors covered in muck and mire ran, crawled, climbed and splashed their way around a specially created mud obstacle course last Saturday during the fourth annual Polson Mud Run.

A little more than 100 adventurous souls battled the muddy terrain raising cash to help support the after school and summer programs provided by the Boys and Girls Club of the Flathead Reservation and Lake County.

The muddy 5K obstacle course took a dozen volunteers a week to build and was designed on the simple principle of challenging the runner to conquer obstacles while having fun getting covered in mud.

“I think everybody had a really good time,” Boys and Girls Club board member Michal Delgado said.

Some 25 obstacles including mud pits, Tarzan swing, monkey bars, sal-mon ladder, underwire crawl, tire flip, hay pyramid, PVC crawl, belly flop, archery, and a river wade spanned the more than three-mile-long course that was built on the generously donated Polson rodeo/fairgrounds.

“We been running this race a few years,” Barbara Jean Dupuis from Tucson said. “We love this event.”

According to the Boys and Girls club website, racers who have also competed in the Spartan, Tough Mudder, and Dirty Dash race series have said this race is as fun, and at times more challenging than those races.

“We love doing these kind of runs,” competitor Joe Menez said. “We do all the other runs (but) this is probably our favorite for sure. You just can have fun and get a little dirty for a good cause.”
