POLSON – A new bookstore recently opened in Polson at 101 7th Ave. W. The building the store is located in is also occupied by the JourneyBe church and the Soups On soup kitchen.

Dave Marshall, a book enthusiast, came up with the idea to start a bookstore in order to raise money for JourneyBe. Dave began going to JourneyBe 30 years ago and has been an active member since. In 2016 he was elected to become a moderator for the church, a job similar to a manager. Three years ago Dave noticed a collection of donated books growing in one of the storage rooms, sparking his idea for a bookstore.

One of the founders of Soups On, Sandy Farrell, helped Dave start the bookstore. It took a few years to plan and set up the store before it opened last year in 2016. At the start of 2017 Sandy moved to California to be with her family, leaving Dave to run the store on his own. “I am here almost every day trying to get the bookstore started,” Dave said. “I always appreciate help from others.” Dave has a few volunteers that come in to help him sort and organize the books from time to time, but says he could use a few more.

All the books in Pretty Good Books are donations. “We take strictly used books,” Dave said. “We have more than enough without getting brand new books, and I hate to waste any. I have 50 or 60 boxes of books that I haven’t even looked through yet.” Dave recycles the books that don’t sell in order to make room for new ones.

Books are sold for $2 a pound unless they are otherwise marked.

The store occupies the front rooms of the building and almost all of the shelves are filled. “There is a book here for everyone, we have a huge variety of genres.” Dave said. “Old and new.”

Book sale proceeds benefit JourneyBe church activities and various items for the building such as furniture, gardening supplies, and maintenance repairs.

Pretty Good Books has been open on and off since last year, but officially opened on July 18. Store hours are Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
