Editor,

At the end of the recent legislative session, Montana disability service providers celebrated a small victory, a much needed wage increase for our Direct Support Professionals or DSPs. These staff are critical to the lives of Montana citizens with developmental and intellectual disabilities. For close to minimum wage, they offer individuals the support and assistance they need to enjoy inclusive lives in their communities. The bill that provided this wage increase (HB 638) passed with overwhelming public and political support. However, in the last few days of the session, and without any public input, SB 261 essentially undercut HB 638 and not only will likely prevent any wage increases, but will also lead to a significant rate cut across the board.

At a time when these essential programs need additional funding, we are now facing reductions instead. Most providers, including Mission Mountain Enterprises, are already struggling with staffing issues, which will now be compounded with this decrease in funding. Providers are hoping, with your help, we can convince Governor Bullock that this regulation as proposed should not be adopted. Please take a moment to show your support for individuals with disabilities by emailing your concerns to dphhslegal@mt.gov. They will accept public input on this matter through Aug. 4. We are very grateful for our community, which has shown continued support of the work we do and the individuals we support. Thank you.
