Keith Baker has been fascinated with barbecue sauce since he first reinvented his mother’s sauce when he was 17 years old in 1967. In 2003, Baker began selling and producing his paste, called Garlic Head, and has found a local following through selling the sauce at local grocers and farmers markets in the Mission Valley.

“You will not find a more flavorful barbecue sauce,” Baker said. “People around the world have asked me how I got so much garlic flavor.”

Although Baker’s ingredients must be provided on the label for all to see, he still keeps the process of how he mixes the ingredients a secret. The all-natural, no preservative product is also gluten-free, and is versatile for different dishes, Baker added.

With Garlic Head growing in popularity, Baker was notified last week that his paste will be featured on WCNC-TV’s Live Local Lifestyle program, which is part of Charlotte Today on Nov. 23 at 11 a.m. Eastern time.

Chef Carrie Hegnauer has developed two recipes with Baker’s paste: Garlic Head Turkey Chili and Garlic Head Shrimp Boats. According to Baker, Hegnauer is a well-known cook who has taught many friends and former students to become successful cooks.

Her current show is a twelve segment series called “Culinary Classroom,” airing on Time Warner Cable’s Carolina on Demand channels 199 and 1047.

“I’m jazzed because people think a small product like this has no reach,” Baker said.

For the show, Baker had Lindsay Myers of Image Quest develop an apron with the Garlic Head logo in just a few days so that it would have time to arrive in Charlotte, N.C., for the airing of the episode.
