RONAN —  It’s been 30 years this October since Marilyn Jette opened a hair salon, and she took time to reflect on its success last week.

Reflections Salon began in a building across from Ronan High School in 1987, but five years later Jette purchased the former Burlington Northern railroad depot building at 426 Main St. SW.

“It had been sitting empty several years,” Jette said. “It was a horrible mess.”

The building was completely gutted and transformed for use as a hair salon.

A second remodel was done in 2006 followed by an update of the outside of the building last year, Jette said.

The building is one of the keys to the success of her business, she said.

“When people see that you’re interested in updating yourself, it makes a huge difference,” Jette said.

Other key factors include employees treating each other and customers with respect, providing good customer service and laughter.

“Laughter is important. We have so much fun in here. I always look forward to coming to work,” said Jette, who has been a hairdresser for 37 years.

The longevity of her employees may indicate their happiness.

“It’s been really unusual,” Jette said. “It just does not happen in hair salons that people stay this long.”

“We’re kind of like family,” said Corena Hardy, a hair stylist who has been with Jette from the beginning.

Other employees and their length of employment include: Leslie Smith, nail tech, 29 years; Caralee Starkel, hair stylist, 25 years; Krista Kirsch, hair stylist, 22 years; Holly Lockwood, receptionist, 20 years; Barb Phillips, massage therapist, 15 years; Kristi Horner, hair stylist, 11 years, and Marie Noble, facials, five years.

A large percentage of the salon’s customers have been coming for years, Jette said, adding that she is thankful for them and for her employees.

Business hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday. The phone number is 676-HAIR (4247).
