POLSON – The Polson High School boys’ and girls’ soccer teams took care of business against the visiting Libby Loggers on Saturday, winning both parts of a double-header.

In the girls’ game, the Lady Pirates won 4-1 as Marina Mayorga scored twice and had an assist, while Kyla Heiser and Aisha Clark also scored. Megan Rost made six saves at goal.

“The girls played hard and came together as a team to win,” girls’ head coach Jamie Whealon said. “The one thing about this team is they are never satisfied about their play.”

The Lady Pirates head to Hamilton on Saturday for the first round of playoffs.

“They are the top team out of the South and it should be a close game, Whealon said. “I know they’re thinking about last year when we came down and won 3-1.  The girls are hoping to do the same. Nothing is impossible for this team.”

In the boys’ game, the Pirates shut out the Loggers 10-0. Robin Erickson scored the first of his three goals in the 10th minute of the game. The junior forward also found the back of the net in the 12th minute and 15th minute to record a hat trick. Mack Moderie scored two goals and booked four assists in the game.

Alexis Guerrero, Connor Lanier, Bridger Wenzel, Alex Wall-Wilbert and Brayden Mueller all made goals to help Polson finish the regular season 10-1-1.

“It’s been an incredible season, and we have a great group of players with both talent and experience,” boys’ head coach Adam Fansher said. “This is by far the most balanced team I have ever had in my time here and we have quality players in every position who really buy into the concept of playing as a team.”

The Pirates finished the conference with an 8-0 record and will host Missoula Loyola in the first round of the playoffs on Saturday.

“Going into the playoffs our offense is really clicking, and the defense has been solid all year,” Fansher said. “The challenge for this team will be to raise their level of play for the playoffs and approach these games with the correct mentality.”
