Editor,

Self-imposed ignorance is alive and well, particularly here in Montana politics. We have a history of a proud rural heritage but with that came entrenched prejudices handed down from generation to generation. We prefer to ignore facts which go against our bias yet willingly believe as real, statements and positions that conform to that bias.

Take the fake news letter from Mr. Wunderlich last week. He mentions how Obama promised elements of the health care program the democrats passed did not come to pass. That is true then just as it is now with Trump, or Nixon or Johnson or any other president who in our country is not a king.

But when the republicans gained control of both houses, Mr. Boehner, the House speaker, stated in public that his party’s plan for the president’s agenda is to “kill it, stop it, slow it down.” Mr. McConnell said “the single most important thing we want to achieve is for the President to be a one-term President.”

That opposition, rather than any effort to repair, aid or correct flaws in legislation has led us to this current divide that sees any compromise or joint unity to solve our nation’s problems as unlikely. The republicans hold control of both houses yet are themselves divided and hence cannot pass any meaningful positive legislation.

Even on a local basis, a few determined legislators insured Montana counties who have to spend their assets on an election that could have been done by mail.

I love his last paragraph the best, it so validates my point of view; According to him, “So far Trump’s at least telling the truth.”
