Autumn always brings about a change in our neck of the woods as leaves begin to turn beautiful colors and fall from the trees that were green and full only a month before. Animals begin their ritual of preparing for winter hibernation and pumpkin spice, sweaters and scarves are everywhere. With this changing season comes a big change at the library.

After 19 years with the library, our administrative assistant Mary O’Brien has chosen to retire on Nov. 3. Mary has had a significant impact on the library. She worked with the Montana Memory Project to ensure that Paul Fugleberg’s collection of historical photos are available for all to view online. She has written grants, creates and produces the monthly library newsletter, and started the library’s recycling program. She organizes the tasks and schedules for our incredibly important volunteers and ensures that they are honored each spring by planning a volunteer breakfast for National Volunteer Week. Mary spearheaded the incredible newspaper digitization project for the library. Thanks to her dedication and hard work, you can view digital copies of the Flathead Courier (now the Lake County Leader) from its inception in 1910 through Oct. 1980 at montananewspapers. org. She is just finishing up the project to digitize the remaining years through 2012. Mary does so much more behind the scenes and is a stabilizing force within the library. She will be greatly missed by staff and patrons alike, but we know that Mary has many plans for her retirement including writing and publishing more of her wonderful books and spending lots of time with her grandkids. Stop by between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 3 for cookies and punch, and to wish Mary well.

At 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 28 the library will be participating in the international Observe the Moon Night. This family-friendly event will consist of a short presentation followed by direct observations of the moon using a telescope as well as a fun computer program that teaches about the moon. This program is sponsored by the NASA@ My Library grant we received this year.

Be sure to bring the kids by on Halloween for trick-or-treating at the Library. We will have candy until it is gone.

The library’s hours are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday – Thursday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. We open at 10 a.m. on days that have a children’s program. Visit our website www.northlakecountylibrary. org, our Facebook page, and check the calendar section for updates on the happenings at the library.
