POLSON — One of the questions was, “Mr. Brookman put 63 books on seven shelves. He put the same number of books on each shelf. Which number sentence shows how many books Mr. Brookman put on each shelf?”

To answer, the contestant had to decide whether to divide, multiply, add or subtract to solve the problem.

As a fun way to review for the Montana Criterion-Referenced Tests fourth graders were taking the week of March 5, students held their version of the game show “Are You Smarter than a Fourth Grader?” The questions came straight off released items for the CRTs.

The CRTs are standardized tests given to all students in grades three through eight and high school sophomores. In general, CRTs are given to measure how well a student has learned the material taught in a specific grade. For adults, a multiple-choice driver’s test and a road test are both examples of a CRT test. For Linderman students, questions dealt with geometry, number sense, problem solving, reading genre and comprehension, parts of speech, figurative language, life science, physical science, earth science and technology, fourth grade teacher Tami Morrison said.

A panel composed of one student from each fourth grade classroom challenged a group of parents and allowed them to cheat, copy or save other parents,” according to Morrison. The prize was a million fake dollars, and cher Sarah Bartel was the show hostess.

Adult contestants included Blaine Marsh, John Reese and Heather Jones. Only Jones was as smart as a fourth -grader, and she’s the principal and a parent at Linderman School.
