ARLEE – The Arlee High School boys and girls basketball teams played host to cross-county and district 14C rival Charlo High School on Thursday night.

Both Arlee teams emerged victorious in the 14C battle, as the Warriors routed the Vikings, 75-33 and the Scarlets outpaced the Lady Vikings, 46-29.

On the girls’ side of the court, both teams entered the contest with matching 6-3 records and hopes of a victory to help give them the momentum necessary to remain highest in their district.

“Going into the game both teams were at the top of the district standings,” Arlee Scarlets head coach Bill Stockton said. “We knew that it was going to be a tough game and it definitely was a battle.”

The Scarlets and Lady Vikings got off to a slow start, with the Scarlets taking a 6-1 lead after a low-scoring first quarter. Arlee got its offense going in the next eight minutes, scoring 10 second-quarter points to enter halftime with a 16-5 lead over the Lady Vikings.

The Lady Vikings gradually chipped away at the Scarlets lead and cut the deficit down to five points on a Kaitlin Cox buzzer-beating three pointer making it a 27-22 game entering the fourth quarter.

Arlee outscored the Lady Vikings 19-7 in the fourth quarter to pull away for the 46-29 home win.

“I felt like we did a real nice job handling the runs Charlo would go on and finishing at the free throw line,” Stockton said.

For the Scarlets, Ashley Tanner scored 10 points and junior Alyssia Vanderburg booked a double-double. On the night, she scored a game-high 25 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and had nine blocked shots.

The Lady Vikings were led by Kaitlin Cox who scored 14 points.

The Warriors, ranked first in the state in Class C, showed why by running Charlo out of the gym in the first quarter 21-4.

Arlee stretched their lead to 35-11 by halftime and continued to pull away in the second half taking a 52-24 advantage into the final quarter.

The Warriors continued to pour it on in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Vikings 23-9 over the final eight minutes.

Senior Phillip Malatare led the Warriors with a game-high 22 points, 13 rebounds, six steals and six assists, Issac Fisher had 11 points and three blocked shots, while Lane Johnson added 17 points.

Landers Smith scored a team-high 11 points to lead the Vikings.

The next meeting of the two schools will be in Charlo on Feb. 8.
