POLSON – The present met the future as entrepreneurs and professionals recently had a chance share their careers with Polson High School students during the first annual Career Connection Day on Monday, April 23.
On hand were professionals from in and around the Mission Valley representing more than 20 different fields, including representatives from the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes, Amazon Web Services, Jore, KPAX, Century 21, First Interstate Bank, Mission Valley Power, St. Joseph Medical Center and Glacier Bank to name a few.
Most of the speakers brought displays, equipment and hands-on materials to engage and enlighten students.
Students were given an opportunity to ask questions directly of the guest speakers. Among the questions students asked were what the best and worst part of the job is, typical work days, working conditions, salary, employment potential for the future and questions about qualifications and educational training.
Career Connection Day event organizer and school counselor Betsy Wade made mention that the students were really engaged in the activities, “They asked really good questions and seemed happy to be able to connect their learning to the real world.”
Keynote speaker was Kelly Stickel, a graduate of Polson High School and CEO and founder of Remodista - a Chicago based social think tank group.
“I felt honored to be asked to speak,” Stickel said. “As someone who grew up in Polson and went out in the world to find career success, I wanted to come back and show the kids here that you can come from a small town and still do anything you want.”
“I had a wonderful time at PHS Career Connection Day,” Stickel noted. “I found the students engaging and excited about their futures.”
