Chauncey Whitwright IV, an Idaho man with ties to Lake County, entered a plea of not guilty at District Court in Polson on March 15 to forgery by common scheme. According to court records, Whitwright allegedly defrauded the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes by knowingly altering checks in a way that made them appear to have been issued by the tribes. Most of the checks, 22 in all, range in amounts from $400 to $1,000. One was written in the amount of $266.54. The 22 checks total $17,066.54.

District Judge Kim Christopher set a trial date of July 9, 2018 with an omnibus, or pre-trial hearing set for May 17. In the meantime, Whitwright remains in the Lake County Jail with bail set at $25,000.
