POLSON —The fourth annual Flathead Lake Rock Skipping Championship is an all-ages family friendly competition that encourages chuckers, gerplunkers, tossers, flingers, wingers, and slingers to come test their rock skipping skills on the shores of Flathead Lake. Conceived to create greater awareness for the Mission Valley Ice Arena, this annual competition is becoming the event that really gets summer skipping along.

On Saturday morning, June 2, competitors will find themselves at Riverside Park in Polson throwing three “flights” of three rocks each. The highest number of skips in each of four categories will take home the vaunted title of Flathead Rock Skipping Champion.

Although seemingly easy, rock skipping takes a decided amount of skill, especially if one is intent on bringing home a title. Last year’s men’s champion, Tom Adrignola, won the men’s competition with 18 skips, and Lex Avison took home the golden rock for the boy’s competition with eight skips. If you think you can beat those, you’re just the person we need to skip their hat into the ring. There are many styles that have developed over the years, from heavy-handed power-skippers, whose energetic hurling sends their stones catapulting over the water in enormous bounds, to precision-pitchers who deftly deliver their stones within the easy view of the judge’s watchful eyes.

Registration for the 2018 edition of the Flathead Lake Rock Skipping Championship will begin at the Cove Deli in Polson at 9 a.m. After a short rules briefing at the Cove Deli, a bagpipe escort will kick-off the event as participants and spectators proceed down the hill to Riverside Park. Registration fees are $15 for adults, $12 for children under 12 or $45 for families of three or more. Registration fees include a celebratory lunch and awards party including pizza and pop at the Cove Deli and Pizza after the competition. The categories are: Men 13 years and over, Women 13 years and over, Boys under 12 years and Girl’s under 12 years.

This is a BYOR event, which of course means “Bring Your Own Rocks.” So, head down to your secret skipper stash and pick yourself a winner and we’ll see you on June 2.

All benefits go to help the Mission Valley Ice Arena Association bring a rink to the Mission Valley and develop youth and adult skating, curling, and hockey programs.
