Editor,

Citizens of Lake County, as your sheriff since 2015, it is hard to believe another election season is upon us. For as many accomplishments as we have had at the sheriff’s office in that time, it feels like we are just getting started. I know there are many more things we can accomplish together with your continued support.

In my first term, I made measured budgetary decisions to ensure sound management of your tax dollars. This came at the cost of some ancillary services that are not critical to the daily operations of the office, but we have greater efficiency in the services that our community relies upon on a daily basis. There are better equipped, and more uniformed officers than in the past, even though we are operating with two less officers due to budgetary constraints.

We created and made progress on a zero-cost community service program, the Sheriff Labor Detail. My undersheriff’s involvement in the drug court has also been successful and is demonstrative of my support for alternatives to incarceration when possible.

The county commissioners are currently making a decision regarding what project they will support in a recently available community development planning grant. One is a proposal for a planning project for a jail. If it's selected, we will finally achieve the next step in making informed decisions about what direction Lake County will take regarding its aged and inadequate jail.

In closing, I wish to thank you for your support these past few years and to encourage your continued support on June 5. I have dedicated my life to serving this community for the past 26 years and I am the only candidate who has enforced Montana law. It is important that you know that your sheriff will be selected as a result of this primary election vote on June 5, and will run uncontested in the fall general election. The progress we have had in my first term exceeds the expectations of many, and your vote for me, Don Bell, on June 5, ensures that this progress will continue.

Sheriff Don Bell
