News from MSU Extension Lake County

LAKE COUNTY – 4-H Shooting Sports offers personal and skill development to youth through disciplines of air rifle, archery, air pistol, and shotgun here in Lake County. The group meets weekly from November to March each year, currently in Ronan.

Through this program youth learn self-discipline and motivation through patience, respect, and shooting education with adult state certified 4-H shooting sports leaders. The utmost concern of the program is safety. 4-H leaders must attend an additional certification class in the Shooting Sports discipline they wish to be involved in. Lake County has had three leaders take the national certification program for at least one discipline. Our outstanding program has had leaders nationally certified in archery, muzzle loading, shotgun and rifle. Hopefully, current and future Lake County 4-H leaders will be selected for participation in the national program to continue this tradition of excellence.

Each year, 4-H members show improvement in their scores through hard work and program attendance. Previous Lake County 4-H members have received college scholarships to participate on college shooting sport’s teams in Montana and other states.

Individuals choose which disciplines and events to compete in. There are four age categories in each event. A is for members 9 to 10 years old, B is for members 11 to 12 years old, C is for members 13 to 14 years old, and D is for members 15 and up.

4-H Shotgun members will complete their county shoot on Sunday, July 22nd, at Big Sky Sporting Clays near Polson. Results of this shoot will be posted in future 4-H results. Thank you to the certified 4-H Shooting Sports leaders who continue to help members grow and improve: Ed Larson, coordinator and air rifle instructor; Bob Cornwell, air rifle instructor; Les Mutchler, archery instructor; Nathan Cantlon, archery and shotgun instructor; and Steve Larson, air rifle and pistol instructor.

If you have a child between the ages of 9 and 18 on October 1, and they are interested in learning more about shooting sports, 4-H enrollment begins on October 1.  Please contact the Extension Office at the Community Center in Ronan or call 406-676-4271 for more information.
