POLSON – Motor vehicle injuries are a leading cause of death among children 12 years and younger, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

In fact, the NHTSA finds that half of all child safety seats are not properly fitted to the child or installed correctly in a vehicle.

Bishop Insurance in collaboration with Lake County Public Health Department offered a drive-through child safety seat check and car safety education during the third Annual Car Seat Event and Summer Safety Day held in the Walmart parking lot on Aug. 8.

“Well, it was a slow start but once it got going we checked nine car seats and vehicles,” said Leigh Estvold of the Lake County Public Health Department.

Buckling children in age and size appropriate car seats, booster seats, and seat belts reduces serious and fatal injuries by more than half.

During the free event, kids also had the opportunity to learn about bike, gun and fire safety through various activities at the assorted local emergency services educational stations and by interacting with a fire truck from the Polson Fire Department.

Free bicycle helmets were given away at the Polson Police Department’s booth, while the Lake County Sheriff Department offered free gun locks to parents.

For anyone who missed Child Car Seat Safety Day, Lake County Public Health Department inspects car seats on an ongoing basis. Please call 406-883-7288 to make an appointment.
