POLSON — This year 20 20-pound turkeys will be roasted to feed the crowd at the Polson Community Thanksgiving Dinner, according to coordinator Tracy Plaiss. Last year 15 birds fed the diners, but Plaiss said planners want to make sure there is enough food.

The dinner will be held on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 24, at the Polson Senior Citizens Center at 503 Fourth Ave. from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Hosted jointly by the senior center and the Polson Ministerial Association, the dinner includes turkey and dressing, cranberries, mashed potatoes and gravy and even homemade rolls and pies and real whipped cream.

Plaiss said local churches provide homemade pies, rolls and salads and the Veterans of Foreign Wars sends food, too.

“A huge number of volunteers help,” Plaiss said, “and the staff at the senior center cooks.”

The senior center roasts as many turkeys as they can fit in their ovens, and other community members bake the rest of the turkeys for the feast. Local youth groups come to the senior center on the night before Thanksgiving and peel potatoes. This year 120 pounds of spuds donated by Lake Farms will be waiting for the kids, Plaiss added, up from 100 pounds last year. The students also do the initial set-up of tables so everything in the dining room is ready to go on Thanksgiving morning.

People also volunteer to pour water and coffee, clear tables, cut pies, set tables, wash dishes and refill serving dishes

Folks who need home delivery of a Thanksgiving meal or who don’t have transportation to the senior center can call Cathy Corrigan at 883-4735 to make arrangements.

Besides good food and people to visit with, the dinner also features entertainment.

On tap so far are Margery Christensen and John Davis, Sue and Ed Wing and their group and the Old Time Fiddlers.

Everyone is welcome at the dinner, and donations are accepted to help defray costs.
