News from Montana State Parks

KALISPELL – Lone Pine State Park will host a presentation on Traditional Cultural Landscapes of the Flathead Valley with Tim Ryan on Saturday, Oct. 13 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Join us as we learn about the ancestral tribes of the Flathead Valley and their knowledge and use of cultural landscapes. Tim Ryan is an archaeologist, artist, educator and a tribal member of the Salish and Kootenai Tribes of the Flathead Reservation; he specializes in the ancestral skills, technologies and the traditional ecological knowledge of his tribes. Ryan will be discussing the movements and activities of indigenous peoples and the connection they had with their aboriginal territories. Ryan will use maps, history, stories and his recreated artifacts to tell the story of the Flathead Valley.

This program is open to all ages, but better suited for ages 13 and up. The cost is $6 for ages 13 and over and free for ages 12 and under. For More information, call the park visitor center at 406-755-2706.

Ryan grew up spending a great deal of time exploring the mountains and valleys in and around the Flathead Reservation and extended aboriginal territory. He creates authentic, high-quality materials that are constructed with traditional methods and used for museum displays and hands-on education. His presentations, coursework, and curriculum have been requested by educational institutes in the states of Washington, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana and in Canada.

Lone Pine State Park is located five miles southwest of Kalispell and offers one of the most vivid views of the valley, seven and a half miles of trails, and a beautiful interpretive center that provides information on living in a wildlife urban interface.  Additional amenities include a picnic shelter and a community room, which are both available to rent, as well as a volleyball court, horseshoe pit, and an archery range. Furthermore, Lone Pine offers a fantastic variety of educational and interpretive programs.
