A Polson man was committed at District Court in Polson on Oct. 11 to the Montana Department of Corrections for six years with two years suspended for sexually assaulting a young girl.

Brandon J. Mathias, 29, pled guilty to felony sexual assault on Aug. 23.

According to court records, on Jan. 3, a child, born in 2005, went to her counselor at Polson Middle School and said that Mathias had touched her inappropriately in March 2016.

Representatives of the Department of Health and Human Services and Polson police told Mathias that an investigation of abuse of a child was being conducted. Polson Police would later attempt to make contact with Mathias only to find out he had quit his job, gathered up his valuable possessions and left Polson, leaving a wife and child behind.

Lake County Deputy Attorney Ben Anciaux said authorities located Mathias in Sierra Vista, Arizona, on Feb. 23 and returned him to Montana to face the charge.

Mathias was designated a tier 1 level sex offender, the lowest risk to re-offend. Judge Kim Christopher ordered him to complete phase I and II and the state’s sex offender treatment program and gave him credit for 200 days served.
