Editor,

American economist and philosopher, Dr. Thomas Sowell, once noted there are facts based upon experience and “facts” based upon assertions (i.e. “ideas/hypotheses”). The “Hold your nose” letter by Leslie Kline makes assertions regarding the President and Republicans in general that do not reflect the facts. As to whether President Trump is or isn’t a “nice man,” I can’t attest. I’ve never met him. But I can make a very good case that he isn’t a threat to “our democracy.” I voted for him because his opponent was a threat to our republic and Trump “promised” to promote policies that would strengthen the republic and preserve our liberties. I had little hope he’d actually do what he said he would do. Much to my surprise, he has either followed through or has attempted to do so.

More importantly, Trump has, again, much to my surprise, done nothing that is unconstitutional. He has killed many regulations that aren't in the spirit of the Constitution or are contrary to the Constitution. He hasn’t even exercised many of the powers he has as chief executive of the United States. The author of the letter asserts the President cares nothing for our nice little laws and “norms” but didn’t tell us what laws and “norms” he has violated.

He promised to appoint judges that are “originalist and textualist” and is doing so. Whether or not these judiciary appointments actually practice judicial restraint remains to be seen.

Despite his rhetoric regarding the press, he hasn’t put members under surveillance as his predecessor did. And, thus far has protected the rights of sovereign people to bear arms. That, along with “originalist” judges, may be the most important Republican policy the President is attempting to preserve. After all, the United States is the only nation ever established under the primus that citizens are the sovereigns and the government is the fiduciary. As the German sociologist Max Weber noted, a sovereign is the entity with a monopoly of coercion.
