Editor,

I would like to correct two statements included in CSKT Chairman Ron Trahan’s “Letter to the Community” that was published in local newspapers the past two weeks.

Mr. Trahan referred to a Federal Highway Administration Tribal Transportation Program grant of $438,531 that was used to install guardrails on some unsafe bridges and roads in Lake County. Mr. Trahan wrote, “The Lake County Commissioners signed off on these grant applications before submittal.” The Commissioners did sign off on the grant submittal in 2016, but made it clear that before any guardrails could be put in place, a maintenance agreement would have to be agreed upon as the County had no money in its budget to repair damaged guardrails once they were in place.

No agreement was ever reached, and as a result, no guardrails were ever installed on any County road or bridge. The $438,531 grant may have been received by CSKT, but no contribution was made to Lake County roads by this grant.

Mr. Trahan also pointed out that, “CSKT spends another $50,000 annually working with the Lake County weed district to eradicate weeds through spraying.” The Lake County Weed Department budget reveals no income from CSKT to that department, and our Weed Department supervisor maintains that Lake County has no agreement with CSKT for weed eradication.

CSKT undoubtedly contributes significantly to Lake County’s economy, but residents deserve accurate information as to the amount and source of the contributions.

Gale Decker
Lake County Commissioner
