Jason Smith

HELENA — Jason David Smith, 35, passed away unexpectedly on Oct. 8, 2018. Jason was born on April 11, 1983, and was raised in Helena. He lost his parents in 1998 and was adopted with three other boys. All the boys were from different families and all three graduated M.Y.C.P. of Dillon in 2001. Jason often said his brothers Marcus, Nate, and Jacob, although not blood related, were closer than any family he could have.

Jason moved to Bozeman in 2006 to be closer to his younger brother and attend MSU. In 2008 Jason followed his older brothers into the United States Marine Corp.

Jason was known for his large stature, and even bigger heart. Whether it be playing caregiver to his older brother recovering from injuries in the line of duty, or flying to Minnesota to drive his younger brother home to Bozeman through a blizzard after being released from a Minneapolis hospital, he was available to family.

Two of the proudest moments in Jason’s life were: completing the Continental Drive Trail with two of his brothers and graduating from USMC basic training.

Jason believed that because he and his brothers were all adopted from different circumstances, they were “Rays of Positivity” the world was in need of. This speaks of his positive attitude.

Jason spent the past four years living between Helena and San Diego, California, working as a counselor for veterans with disabilities. Even after losing his parents as a kid, and two of his brothers in the past 14 months, he continued to help others until his passing.

Jason was preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Kelly Smith of Tacoma, Washington, and his two brothers, Marcus Kent of Denver, Colorado, and Nate Jones of Jacksonville, North Carolina

Jason is survived by his adoptive father, Daniel Wood of Helena, and his brother, Jacob Mozer, of Bozeman.

A private service will be held. Donations can be made to: VFW Post 10010, 117 W. Main Street, East Helena, MT 59635. For more information on service time and location, contact: dan.wood.helena65@gmail.com
