Louis McLeod Sr.

POLSON — Louis E. McLeod Sr. “Bumum,” 80, of Polson, went peacefully to be with the Creator on Nov. 12, 2018, at Polson Health and Rehabilitation, due to health issues.

Louis was born in St. Ignatius on July 31, 1938. He was the son of Blanche Soucie and Albert McLeod. He was the eldest of nine children.

Surviving him are Shirley Pinkston of Ronan, Fran McLeod of Polson, Margaret Lopez of Ronan, Betty QueQueSah of Ronan, Robert McLeod of Polson, Julie Parker of St. Ignatius and “Babe” Margaret Pearson of Iowa.

Louis was educated in Dixon, Moiese, and in St. Ignatius by the Ursulines. He graduated from eighth grade in Moiese.

He served in the Army and received an honorable discharge.

He married Rose Palmar, which produced six children. They divorced and Louis married Mary Bell Hall. They had one child. They also divorced. He married Rosemary Grove, and adopted her two children. They later divorced.

Louis held a variety of jobs that included working as a firefighter, a bartender, a bus driver and a janitor. Louis worked as a janitor for Missoula County Courthouse for over three years. He then moved back to St. Ignatius and went to work for Two Eagle River School. He worked as a bus driver and janitor at Two Eagle River School. Louis worked there for 27 years. His famous words were, “I’m going to retire next year.” He worked up until the day he got sick.

Some of the things Louis enjoyed were country music, Indian songs, playing pool, camping, going to pow wows and family.

Louis was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather, Amos McLeod; his sister, Georgina Gardipe; and his grandchildren, Amos and Daniel.

He is survived by his spouses and nine children: Sylvia (Marvin) Gardipe, Sarah, Shirley ( John) Gohl, Albert, Fred (Carol), and Louis Jr.; all of Ronan, along with Eva of Texas; and Lena (Kurt Sr.) Burland of Polson; and Jacob “Sonny” of Butte. Louis is also survived by 23 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services have taken place, handled by Foster Funeral Home. Louis was laid to rest in the Old Catholic Cemetery in St. Ignatius with a military honor guard.

The family would like to thank the cooks, Foster Duraglah Home and everyone else involved with helping Louis.
