POLSON – The Lake Monsters Swim Club hosted the annual Montana Holiday Classic Swim Meet on Saturday and Sunday at the Mission Valley Aquatics Center.

Six swim clubs from around Western Montana competed in the meet featuring more than 40 swimmers participating in 38 relay and individual events.

For the Lake Monsters, August Hertz finished first for the boys, in the 11-12 age group, in several categories including: the 1650-yard freestyle, 100-yard freestyle, 50-yard backstroke, 100-yard butterfly, 50-yard butterfly and the 50-yard freestyle.

Amelia Stene placed first in the girls 10 and under age group in the 50-yard backstroke and 100-yard butterfly.

Many local swimmers were posting their best personal swim times. “There were quite a few kids that dropped time or stayed right on their times,” said Shayna

Swanson, head coach for the Lake Monsters.

Despite not participating in all the events in last weekend’s home swim meet, the Lake Monsters Swim Club scored 364 points as a team to finish third among a field that included the Missoula Aquatic Club, Missoula YMCA Swim Team, Peak Waves Swim Team and Wave Ryders Swim Club.

“They did incredible,” Swanson said. “I am really proud of them. We dropped a lot of times this meet or tied a lot, which is really good for mid-season since we did not tapper our workouts. We didn’t take a break before this meet. We went straight into competition from doing pool workouts of 6,000 to 7,000 yards a day.”
