RONAN – There are going to be some new names and pictures added to Ronan High School’s “Wall of Fame” this month. The “Wall of Fame” originated in the early 1970s with the intent of recognizing all Ronan High School athletes who achieved All-state status.

Requirements for All-state status in each individual sport are outlined in the District Activity Policy. Football players, who were selected to participate in the East/West Shrine Football Game, were also wall eligible.

During my research for a book I published some years ago, I uncovered the names of some former athletes and a coach who were named All-state or participated in the Shrine Game prior to 1970, who should be on the wall. The completed list contains 14 individuals and two teams that seem to meet the criteria for placement.

Individuals include Phillip “Frenchy” Roullier and Alexander “Sam” Clairmont who were named to the All-state basketball team in 1929, and state track champions John Cornelius and Ralph Salomon in 1931 and 1948, respectively.

Three members of the Ronan 1960 State Basketball champion team, Harold Fullerton, Jim Hurt and Lenny Schacher were named to the All-tournament team. Their coach, Art Previs, was also honored as Class B “Coach of the Year.”

In 1964, Dennis Webster, in addition to being selected to the Shrine Game, was also selected as an All-state basketball player. Other Shrine Game nominees included Richard “Dick” Schroer in 1950, Kenneth Schroer in 1956, Dan Corcoran in 1957, Harold Fullerton and George White, Jr. in 1960 and Roy Loman in 1966.

The 1935 girls basketball team finished the season 14-0 and were Lake County and western Montana champs, and the 1960 boys basketball team met team requirements for being placed on the wall.

A ceremony is being planned for Jan. 25 in the Ronan Event Center between the girls and boys basketball games against Polson to recognize the individuals and teams who will be placed on the wall. It is hoped that some of the individuals honored will be able to attend the ceremony.

Family or relatives of any of the individuals are also welcome to be part of the ceremony. Those planning to attend and be recognized on the 25th are asked to contact me at 406-396-2796 or by email at gdecker48@ronan.net.
