POLSON – The Polson Pirates used four pins and four forfeits to record a 48-24 Northwest A Conference dual wrestling victory over visiting Columbia Falls MatCats Thursday evening.

Pirate wrestling head coach Matt Owen cited strong performances by Maysn Cowell at 126 pounds and Caleb Pierre at 145 pounds, each of whom earned pins over tough opponents. “They both had really hard-fought matches and they were able to come out with some big pins for our team,” Owen said.

Polson also got pins from Rene Pierre at 113 pounds and Hunter Fritsch at 170 pounds.

“It was a great win against a solid opponent,” said Owen. “Overall, I thought we had a solid team performance tonight. I really felt every wrestler stepped on the mat and competed hard.”

On Friday and Saturday, the Pirates took ninth place in a field of 31-teams at the Sentinel High-hosted Jug Beck Rocky Mountain Classic in Missoula.

The Pirates finished with 99.5 points, just ahead of Coeur d’Alene Vikings' 99.0 points.

Fritsch placed second in the 170-pound class. Bridger Wenzel took home fourth place in the 152-pound class, and Rene Pierre placed fifth in the 113-pound bracket.

The Pirates will now prepare to attend the Class A duals in Belgrade on Friday and Saturday.
