POLSON – For the second consecutive year in a row, Kayla Blixt clinched the Pheasants Forever Youth Shooting League Championship title in the girls’ division.

Blixt, a Polson High School senior, joined more than 50 youth shooters from around the Flathead and Mission valleys during the one-day event held at the Big Sky Sporting Clays in Polson.

Saturday’s championship is the culminating event to a season of sporting clays, trap and skeet competitions that started in February. Students competed every Saturday at various shooting ranges and clubs throughout the area.

Along with the overall championship, Blixt won the league’s girl high overall average in trap, skeet, five stand and the George Schmidt Memorial Award for the most improved girl shooter.

Blixt noted that her father first introduced her to shooting sports when she was in sixth grade. “I had a blast,” she said. “I absolutely fell in love with the sport and have been shooting every year since then.”

While the older students were competing, a group of youngsters from Lake County 4-H were being instructed on how to shoot competitively and how to properly use firearms.
