POLSON —“Graduation comes with great joy and great trepidation,” Polson High School commencement speaker Michael Schwabenbauer said.
Schwabenbauer, an English teacher at PHS, continued telling the class of 2011 that “your country needs you more than ever right now.”
He named public education as a specific need.
“Time is running out,” Schwabenbauer said, “and the people in power don’t seem to give a hoot.”
In a speech mixed with humor, during which he described himself as a collector of baby spoons and despiser of exclamation points, Schwabenbauer encouraged graduates to “set up real human communities,” not just cell phones and facebook. But, he said, communities will not come to you.
“Stay safe, sane and sober,” Schwabenbauer urged the graduates at the end of his speech.
A common thread among the speeches of the six valedictorians, Dani Howlett, Andrew Storro, Breanne Kelley, Kayla Duford, Ryley Grogan and Sierra Pete, and Salutatorian Cody Basler was gratitude for their families and teachers.
Pete also praised her classmates for their individuality.
“We (the class of 2011) are unique,” she said. “ We are not afraid to express ourselves.”
The class of 2011 received an impressive $600,000 in scholarships and awards according to PHS guidance counselor Emily Johnson.
