KALISPELL – The Polson High School girls tennis squad earned enough team points to nab a second place overall finish during the Class A State Tennis Tournament on the Flathead Valley Community College tennis courts in Kalispell on Thursday and Friday.

Number one doubles team of Berkley Ellis and Qia Harlan who finished second in the state doubles bracket led the team. It was Ellis’s best state doubles finish since placing fourth in last season’s state tournament.

After the first and second round of doubles action on Thursday, both Ellis and Harlan finished the day undefeated, along with the Lady Pirates’ number two doubles team of Marcella Mercer and Megan Rost.

In semifinals bracket action on Friday morning, Ellis and Harlan defeated Kodie Vondra and Sylvie Schoenen of Livingston 7-6 (7), 6-2 to advance into the championship; while Mercer and Rost fell 6-4, 6-4 to their Whitefish opponent.

Ellis and Harlan faced Northwest A rivals Whitefish Lady Bulldogs Aubrey Hanks and Olivia Potthoff in the championship match. The Polson duo took the first set 6-4, but the rallying Whitefish duo prevailed in the final two sets 6-1, 6-1 to take the championship.

Shea McGuinness, on Thursday afternoon, advanced to the girls singles semis on Friday morning with back-to-back wins for the Lady Pirates. The defending state champion battled hard in the championship brackets on Friday but ultimately finished fourth in the tournament.

On the boy’s side of the net for Polson, singles player Joe McDonald along with doubles teams of Kendal Forman-Webster and Bridger Wenzel; Anton Lefthand and Trevor Schultz were eliminated with two losses during Thursday’s bracket action.
