RONAN – Who can resist a dinner of all-you-can-eat fresh snow crab legs, melted butter, a generous bowl of baked beans, salad and bread? Apparently, the more than 325 guests at this year’s annual all-you-can-eat Crab Fest could not.
“This is pretty awesome,” said festival goer Dot Bohrer. “I am happy, I have a nice glass of wine and some delicious crab.”
On Saturday, the Ronan Area Chamber of Commerce sponsored the BYOBACP event (bring your own beverage and crab pliers). The festival is typically hosted at Bockman Park; however, event organizers this year relocated the crustacean smorgasbord to the horticulture hall at the Lake County Fairgrounds to coincide with the four-day Chainsaw Carving Rendezvous.
Although event organizers significantly increased the crab order, the more than 500 pounds of snow crab that went into the large 80-gallon pot of boiling water was still not enough crab to accommodate everyone.
While Ronan Area Chamber of Commerce manager Brian Bergquist said he was very disappointed that not everyone was able to be served, he was, however, very appreciative of how the community responded to this year’s event by coming out and showing up in a “big, big way.”
“I was thrilled. It was a huge success,” said Bergquist of one of the biggest turnouts the Crab Fest has ever seen.
The all-you-can-eat Crab Fest is an annual fundraiser organized to provide an economic boost for a variety of local organizations and community projects within the Ronan area. A recipient for this year’s proceeds has not been named yet, but past funds have gone to projects and programs including the iconic Ronan arch, the Ronan Beautification Project and the Ronan City Parks Department.
