RONAN — The bus ride was short for the Polson High School Speech, Debate and Drama team when they traveled to the Ronan Invitation Meet on Jan 15. Maybe the short ride and more sleep energized the PHS students and helped them earn fourth in Class A Speech Sweeps and second place in Class A Drama Sweeps. Each student who places in finals earns points for the team, and then points are totaled up for sweeps scores.

The team of Kelsey Koberg and Logan Nutzman placed first in Policy Debate followed by Eric DeLay and Reed Hovenkotter in sixth.

Pantomime competitor Sierra Pete earned first with her selection, “Wingless.” Teammate Larissa Hanson finished fifth in Pantomime.

Nation Garza with his piece about the beginnings of schizophrenia entitled “the Day the Voices Stopped” by Ken Steele earned second place in Serious Solo Acting.

Humorous Solo Acting teammates Delaney Kohler and Emmy Driscoll placed third and eighth respectively.

In Humorous Duo Acting, Delaney Kohler and Jerry Wachel pulled down fourth place followed closely by Nation Garza and Krysta Seville in fifth. The Serious Acting Duo of Isak Petersen and Jarrod Plant took fifth place with their cutting from “Fight Club.”

Classical Duo actors Laura Barta and Sydney Gambrel received third place for their rendition of the tea party scene from “The Importance of Being Earnest.”

Other PHS students who attended the meet but did not advance to finals were: Selah Waldron, Extemporaneous Speaking, Molly Ricketts, Impromptu Speaking, Zach Calhoun, Humorous Oral Interpretation of Literature, Gabby Link, Serious Oral Interpretation of Literature, Molly Whitewater, Serious Solo Acting and Eryn McGinnis, Serious Solo Acting.

Students will be traveling to Libby for the Jan. 22 Class A Divisional Speech, Debate and Drama meet.

"I think that we can make a good showing at Divisionals,” head coach Jon Petersen said. “I don't think there is any way that anyone in the Northwest can really challenge Columbia Falls in Speech; their team is much larger that everyone else's, they have a lot of talent and experience, and they are very well coached. On the other hand, it is probably a toss-up in Drama. We have had our team members watching and critiquing to each other this week, giving each other important feedback. Hopefully the practice will pay off."
