News from the Ronan Bread Basket
RONAN – The Bread Basket Board honored all the Volunteers with a picnic in the park last Sunday.
More than 60 wonderful people donate their time to help keep the food pantry open twice a week, serving approximately 160 families each month. The Bread Basket has been providing food for the community since 1987, started by Sherri McDonald.
Five awards were presented during the lunch. The Amber Waves of Grain award was a given to Ray and Nancy Miller for donating 729 pounds of food from their garden last year. (We do appreciate food donated from your gardens.)
The Ronan Seventh Day Adventist Church was recognized with the Lewis and Clark Award for more than 4,750 pounds of soup and miscellaneous food donations last year.
Bob Burrell and Maurice Webber were given the Treasure State Award as our most treasured volunteers. Bob and Maurice work several days a week, picking up groceries from Harvest Foods, both donated and purchased, totaling over 45,000 pounds. These young men — Bob in his 70s, and Maurice is over 90 — have been with the breadbasket for more than 16 years.
Judy Preston, former chairman, received the Gates of the Mountains Award for opening the gates to end hunger. During her three years as chairman, she introduced our backpack program that we use to help feed children on weekends and expanded our facility by negotiating a huge storeroom where we can sort, store and receive large amounts of food for our families. She was nominated and won the state award in this category from the Montana Food Bank Network.
The Bread Basket welcomes volunteers, food donations and monetary donations to keep our doors open. In 2018, we served 526 families (1,492 persons) a total of 2,044 times. They received over 150,000 pounds of food. Please keep this service organization in your generous thoughts and prayers.
